Abstract:

The major types of natural grassland in Australia (arid tussock, arid hummock, coastal and sub-humid) are described and their present status for preservation in national parks assessed. Temperate and hummock grasslands are compared for conservation status. The temperate grassland has been almost eliminated by sheep grazing and exists only as remnants in SE Australia. The hummock grassland covers much of arid Australia and is fairly well conserved at present
