Abstract

The distribution of native grassland types is related to moisture and temperature gradients. Past trends in distribution likely to continue are the advance into the forest zone, the retreat from higher altitudes and further extensive modification by grazing agriculture. Whether these changes are "good" or "bad" is a human viewpoint. Current social issues influencing native grasslands are considered. In particular the conservation movement is seen as a transient phenomenon.
