In a recent letter to the Editor, Gadgil, Knight, Mead and Will raise an important point, which has been discussed in previous correspondence, but about which there remains a difference of opinion that can only be resolved by the presentation of more data. Although it may not be possible to settle this difference at present, it is important to clarify the issue and promote its discussion.
