Free New Zealand Ecological Society membership for Māori postgraduate students studying Ecology, Biology, Conservation or Resource Management.
The council of the New Zealand Ecological Society (NZES) is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the NZES and has agreed to grant Māori postgraduate students (including Honours students) free membership for the duration of their studies. The intent is to promote the uptake of the study of ecology, biology, resource management and conservation at postgraduate level among Māori, and address the current underrepresentation of Māori students and scientists within the society and New Zealand ecology as a whole. The guidelines for this scheme are as follows:
- Any supervisor at a tertiary institute (University or Wananga) within Aotearoa New Zealand can nominate any Māori postgraduate scholar/s studying Pūtaiao, Kaitiakitanga, Maramataka/maramatanga, Biology, Ecology, Resource Management, or any other related subject. There are no restrictions on the number of students nominated by a given supervision or institution.
- Students must whakapapa Māori.
- Each nomination will be accompanied by a short explanation of the student’s field of study and its relevance to the NZES.
- The NZES council will review the nominations as they come in.
- Successful recipients will be profiled in the NZES newsletter.
- Free memberships will be granted for each year that the recipient is enrolled in postgraduate study – up to one year for the Honours component of a Bachelors degree, two years for a masters degree, and up to four years for a doctorate, dated from the time of award. If a student is nominated part way through their degree they will be eligible for free membership for the remainder of that degree.
- The scheme will be reviewed annually by the NZES Council.
